Man Sets Dog on Fire After Dragging Its Lifeless Body Over Sidewalk

In the early hours of July 24, a man was caught on multiple surveillance cameras dragging a motionless dog down a residential street in South Ozone Park, Queens. Moments later, he allegedly poured a flammable substance on the dog and set the animal on fire at the intersection of 128th Street and 116th Avenue, then fled the scene on foot.

The attack has sparked outrage in the community and across New York City.

Video Shows Shocking Act of Cruelty

Footage shared by neighbors shows the man pulling the lifeless dog by a leash while carrying two bags—one in his hand and another slung over his shoulder. What happens next is nearly unwatchable. According to police, the suspect then doused the animal with an accelerant and set it ablaze in the middle of the intersection, FOX17 reports.

The New York City Police Department's Animal Cruelty Squad quickly launched an investigation, supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), who confirmed they will conduct a necropsy to learn more about how and when the dog died, according to ABC7 New York.

Suspect Caught on Camera, Still At Large

The NYPD released images showing the suspect wearing a maroon sweatshirt with tan Polo lettering, gray pants, and a light brown MCM backpack. They’ve asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or online via their official tip line.

Witnesses described the act as unthinkable.

“To set a dog on fire is ridiculous,” local resident Ganesh Narain told CBS News. “These people are inhumane. They’re not human. The law needs to deal with these kinds of people.”

Neighborhood in Shock

The crime took place in a tight-knit area where many residents own pets. The cruelty has shaken the community.

“I'm a dog owner too, and for people to do something like that is very wrong,” said Bhisham Pasram, speaking with ABC7 New York.

Another neighbor, Nick Samaroo, expressed disbelief.

“I have four cats at home personally. I can't believe anyone would do something like that in this area.”

Residents are now concerned about the safety of their own pets. “This is scary because we have animals,” said a woman named Alessandra.

“Dogs go outside. I have cats — it's kind of scary to go outside because how could anybody do something like this?”

Search Continues, Public Asked to Help

Investigators believe the dog may have already been deceased at the time it was dragged. But regardless of the exact timeline, the public display of violence and disregard for life has many demanding swift justice.

“If they can do it to a dog, maybe they could do it to a human being too,” Narain told FOX17.

Authorities continue to canvass the area, urging anyone who may recognize the suspect to come forward. The NYPD has said all tips will remain confidential.
